![]() In July, the organization behind Bluetooth said it anticipated availability of products with support for LE Audio to ramp up by the end of 2022. No switching between iPhone and Mac required: LE Audio would allow AirPods to connect to multiple source devices like an iPhone and Mac simultaneously, eliminating the need to switch the AirPods between devices.Īpple's press releases and tech specs pages for the iPhone 14 and new AirPods Pro do not appear to make any mention of LE Audio or the benefits listed above, leading us to believe that LE Audio might not be supported on the devices currently, but we've reached out to Apple for confirmation.Apple already has a feature that allows an iPhone or iPad user with AirPods to share audio with another person with AirPods, but the feature does not work with more than two pairs of AirPods. Connect many pairs of AirPods to an iPhone at once: LE Audio would allow for many pairs of AirPods to simultaneously connect to an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or other device with Bluetooth 5.2 or higher. This would allow for an individual left and right AirPod to each have its own Bluetooth audio connection with a device supporting LE Audio for improved reliability. Multi-stream audio: LE Audio would enable the transmission of multiple synchronized audio streams between a source device like an iPhone or Mac and the AirPods Pro.Longer battery life: With the low-power LC3 audio codec, AirPods Pro would have longer battery life for audio playback.Improved audio quality: LE Audio includes a new low-power audio codec called LC3 that provides improved audio quality compared to the classic SBC codec, even at a 50% lower bit rate, according to the Bluetooth SIG.Earlier this week, we outlined five benefits that LE Audio could have for AirPods Pro in particular should Apple support the specification: LE Audio, which can be supported on any device with Bluetooth 5.2 or higher, is a low-power audio streaming specification that would have several benefits for devices within the Apple ecosystem. What do you hope to see in a refresh of AirPods Max? Will new colors be enough to make you happy, or are you hoping for new features and a price drop as well? Let us know down in the comments. All four new iPhone 14 models and the second-generation AirPods Pro include support for Bluetooth 5.3, according to Apple's tech specs for each device, but the status of LE Audio support for the devices remains unclear at this time. This becomes an even more glaring omission if AirPods Pro 2 adds support for lossless playback this year. The over-ear headphones lack support for lossless playback, both via wireless and wired playback. Ideally, Apple will do more than simply update the color options when it refreshes AirPods Max this fall. Also look out for an AirPods Max refresh with new colors (and, we hope, a price drop-$550 is absurd for those headphones). The current model has been on the market since fall of 2019, so the batteries are already probably in trouble for some early adopters. Look out for new AirPods Pro in the fall. While Gurman noted that he would “hope” to see a price drop as well, there’s currently no indication that Apple has any price drop planned. He noted that we are nearly three years past the original AirPods Pro launch, “so the batteries are already probably in trouble for some early adopters.” As an AirPods Pro early adopter, this is something I can corroborate.Īlso in Sunday’s newsletter, Gurman said that alongside AirPods Pro 2, Apple is planning new colors for AirPods Max. In the most recent edition of Power On, Gurman doubled down on AirPods Pro 2 coming sometime this fall. There are also rumors of new health management and fitness tracking features, but we’re still waiting on more details to know exactly what health and fitness features Apple could be planning. Reports so far have indicated that AirPods Pro 2 are expected to feature a new design as well as support for lossless playback for the first time. First, as we’ve detailed in the past, there’s a new version of AirPods Pro on the way. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that Apple has two updates planned for AirPods this year. AirPods Max color refresh and AirPods Pro 2 Now, a new report indicates that we can expect an AirPods Max color refresh as soon as later this year, alongside a new version of AirPods Pro. AirPods Max was originally introduced in a handful of colors including space gray, silver, green, pink, and sky blue.
